Reduce, Reuse and Recycle your waste
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
To reduce the amount of waste items that end up in landfill, think carefully about what you buy in the first place. Do you really need it or can it be repaired or refurbished?
- Shop smart and avoid disposal goods and buy concentrated or refillable products when you can, this will be cheaper in the end.
- Make your own lunch instead of buying from a sandwich shop this not only saves on packaging but can save you up £1000 a year.
- Use ‘Bags for Life’ or reuse your standard carrier bag. This can often earn you extra loyalty points in your local supermarket.
- Buy low energy light bulbs and rechargeable batteries this will be cheaper in the long run. Did you know it takes up to 50 times more energy to produce a battery than it actually delivers!
- Give cinema or concert tickets as gifts instead of buying disposal goods.
Why not think about stopping junk mail or reducing your food waste. Follow the links below to find out more about National Campaigns.
Before you dispose of your old items please consider others that may be able to use them. There are many options for reuse:
- Donate to local charity groups and organisations. Many charity shops take ‘bric a brac’ along with textiles and other smaller household items so ask your local shop if they can use an item you no longer need.
- Use free adverts or car boot sales to sell unwanted goods. Also when considering buying something new think about buying second hand
- Or give it away – why not try www.freecycle.org or www.2recycle.co.uk? These not for profit organisations provide an easy way for people to give away unwanted goods for free to others who would find them useful.
If you reduce and reuse the why not recycle what is left.
- Currently up to 60% of your bin’s contents can be recycled.
- The items you recycle (e.g. paper, glass) are valuable resources and can be made into something useful.
- There is a borough – wide kerbside recycling collection service available to everyone. It collects paper, glass and textiles
- There are 4 Household Waste Amenity Sites containing recycling banks situated around the Count Borough accepting a wide range of materials.
- More recycling services are planned for the future, so watch this space!
