Temporary event notices (TENS)
The Temporary Event Notice (TEN) system has now replaced occasional licences. A TEN permits a premises/club to supply alcohol, regulated entertainment and provide late night refreshment.
In order to submit a TEN the premises user will be required to:-
- Complete and submit the TEN in duplicate to the Licensing and Registration Section at least 10 clear working days prior to the event. (Please note weekends and bank holidays are not classed as a working day).
- Submit the appropriate fee.
- Simultaneously, the premises user must submit a copy of the TEN to the Chief Officer of Police. Please note the Police can object to a TEN under the ‘Crime and Disorder’ licensing objective.

- The TEN will be acknowledged by the Licensing and Registration Section and returned to the premises user.
There are various limitations and below briefly outlined are the main limitations. However. the full limitations can be found on the ‘notes’ at the back of the TEN form:-
- Duration – an event can last for up to a maximum of 96 hours;
- No more than 499 people including staff may attend the event;
- Same premises cannot be used on no more than 12 occasions in any calendar year (i.e. January – December);
- Each premises is also subject to an overall aggregate of 15 days use per calendar year;
- Must be a minimum of 24 hours between events at the same premises;
- A non ‘Personal Licence’ holder is limited to submit 5 notices per calendar year.
- A ‘Personal Licence’ holder is limited to submit 50 notices per calendar year;
- Limitations on applications submit by ‘Associated Persons’ – please refer to notices for further guidance.
Under the Licensing Act 2003, there are exemptions from the requirement to submit a temporary event notice, these are listed under the exemptions section of the website.
