Race
The council is committed to challenging all forms of racial discrimination and promoting good race relations.
The council will carry out its various functions to meet its legal duties under section 71 of the Race Relations Act. This places a general obligation on local authorities to:
|
Eliminate unlawful racial discrimination |
|
Promote equality of opportunity |
|
Promote good relations between persons of different racial groups. |
Race discrimination can have a harmful effect in the community and in the workplace. The comparatively low black and minority ethnic population in the county means that we have a particular responsibility to challenge the myth that there is ‘no problem’ with racism and that the county is immune from racial problems. Particularly, isolation and unfamiliarity can make members of the black and minority ethnic population more vulnerable to discrimination, hostility and inappropriate treatment.
The black and minority ethnic population in the county is diverse. Different communities and individuals have differing needs that should not be defined by preconceptions or stereotyping.
