This course will examine key aspects of the archaeology and history of South Wales from early to modern times, from the earliest known human burial in Europe to post industrial South Wales, drawing on examples of archaeological and historical sites and a variety of historical records therefore understanding the development of the region over time.

The Rise and Fall of Welsh Castles |

This course comprises the evolution of the castle in Wales, focusing on the history and archaeology of castles over time. Learners will explore trends in castle development from the Norman invasion of Wales to the Tudor period. Topics include Norman and native Welsh castles, life in a medieval castle, siege-craft, battles and defence and the magnificently imposing castles of the Edwardian era. No previous knowledge required.

The Tudor Dynasty |

This course takes you on a journey through the history of the ever-popular Tudor period, one of the most colourful and dramatic periods in history. Starting with the Wars of the Roses and the Battle of Bosworth Field, learners will examine the personalities of the five Tudor monarchs and focus on the key issues and events of each reign. Topics include Henry VIII and his six wives, religious change, threats and rebellion, the 'cult' of Elizabeth I and the Spanish Armada. Learners will be introduced to the nature of studying history as a discipline and to the skills of the historian.
