The Equality Challenge
Making our vision a reality by 2016 is an equality challenge for us all.
We acknowledge that discrimination is a reality for people. Discrimination can take many forms and be experienced in different ways. People may be denied life opportunities and prevented from fulfilling their potential because of their:
Gender
Race
Disability
Language
Age
Sexual orientation
Faith
Family & Carers’ Responsibilities.
We understand that we have a moral, social and statutory duty to:
Take steps to promote equality and value diversity
Take steps to prevent discrimination
Take action to remove any actual or potential barriers to equal treatment
Take decisive action when discrimination occurs
To meet this challenge our aim will be to make equality an integral part of the way the council works through its roles as a:
Community leader
Service provider
Employer
Welcoming our responsibility
Leadership is vital to ensure that equality becomes an integral part of the way the council works. To take forward the equality agenda the council has set up a:
Council Equalities Committee, chaired by the Leader of the Council, and a
Corporate Equalities Management Group, chaired by the Executive Director for Learning.
Our General Equality Statement sets out how we will meet the equality challenge.
