Underage Sales
A wide range of consumer products are age restricted to ensure that they are only sold to consumers who are old enough to purchase them on health and safety grounds. The products controlled include tobacco, alcohol, videos, knives and fireworks, all of which have the potential to cause damage to the health and safety of the user.
The Trading Standards Service is responsible for enforcing underage sales, which is addressed by trader education, a programme of inspection and test purchasing using underage volunteers in controlled conditions.
In order to help the business community, Bridgend County Borough Council supports the Validate Proof of Age Scheme operated by Validate UK. The scheme was adopted by Bridgend County Borough Council in 1998 and every year since approximately 1000 proof of age cards have been issued free of charge to pupils at comprehensive schools across the county borough as they attain the age of 16.
The cards serve two purposes, they allow traders to ask young persons attempting to buy age restricted products to prove their age by asking to see the card and they allow young persons who may not look their age to prove that they are old enough to legally purchase the product in question.
