Commercial Practices - Metrology
Metrology
The Trading Standards Service is responsible for metrology, traditionally known as weights and measures within the businesses carried out in the county borough.
Trading Standards Officers carry out inspections at business premises when weighing or measuring equipment is used to ensure they are accurate, comply with statutory requirements made under the Weights and Measures Act and that the purchaser receives the quantity that they pay for.
The equipment tested ranges from the scales in your local corner shop or supermarket to the optics used to measure the spirits you buy in the pub. We also check the equipment used by producers and packers to measure the quantity of the products that you buy pre-packed at your local store, both food items and non-food items. If there is a measure or quantity in the product we are responsible for checking that it is right.
