Noisy Neighbours
The Public Protection Department’s Pollution Control Team receives between 1100 and 1200 complaints every year over three quarters of which are from domestic sources. These include loud stereo music, barking dog and DIY noise. The remaining quarter are due to industrial and commercial sources such as pubs and clubs, factories and construction sites.
Neighbour noise may amount to a statutory nuisance under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. If you are experiencing problems of noise from your neighbours or need advice, please contact the Pollution Control Team.
Some causes of domestic noise are not actionable under the Environmental Protection Act. These include cases involving noise caused by:

There are some noise sources the council does not have the power to control. These include traffic noise, railway noise, aircraft noise and noise from persons shouting in the street. Some of these sources are dealt with by the following agencies
