Atmospheric pollution – air quality

Air quality

Our health and wellbeing is directly related to the quality of the air we breathe. The Public Protection Department’s Pollution Control Team is responsible for regulating emissions to atmosphere from certain industries and monitoring the quality of ambient air outdoors. Issues involving atmospheric pollution may be dealt with in various ways depending on the nature and source of the problem.

Part IV of the Environment Act 1995 requires each local authority periodically to review current and likely future air quality in its area and the Air Quality (Wales) Regulations 2000 and Air Quality (Amendment) (Wales) Regulations 2002 prescribe air quality objectives to be achieved by 2005. The process of reviewing and assessing air quality is a cornerstone of the system of local air quality management.

The Pollution Control Team is responsible for reviewing and assessing air quality in Bridgend County Borough, and in line with the guidance supporting the legislation, has adopted a phased approach to the work. The following reports have been produced to date:
