Abuse is a violation of individuals human and civil rights by any other person or persons.
Abuse can be a single or repeated act and be:
- Physical
- Sexual
- Psychological
- Financial
- Racial
- Institutional Neglect and /or acts of omission
Everybody has a moral (if not a legal duty) to take positive steps when witnessing incidents or receiving information alleging abuse or inappropriate care of a vulnerable adult.
Who would be classed as a ‘Vulnerable adult’?
Adults (a person who is 18 yrs of age or over) who are considered vulnerable are, people with learning disabilities, mental health problems, older people and disabled people, particularly when their situation is complicated by additional factors such as:
- Physical frailty
- Chronic illness
- Sensory impairment
- Challenging behaviour
- Social problems
- Emotional problems
- Poverty
- Homelessness
- Substance abuse
Following on from the launch of the South Wales Protection of Vulnerable Adults Inter Agency Policy and Procedures in December 2001, and Bridgend County Borough Council launch on 31st January 2002, Bridgend has shown its continued commitment to protecting its Vulnerable Adults by the appointment of an Adult Protection Coordinator.
Part of the Adult Protection Co-ordinators role is to raise awareness amongst staff and the general public in respect of Adult Abuse and also to ensure all incidents are reported to the appropriate authorities, and outcomes are a result of a multi agency strategy meeting.
