Reparation

Reparation or community pay back is a fancy word for the 'tasks' that can be carried out by young people on Court Orders to benefit either the victim of their offence or the community.

Every Referral Order contains an element of reparation. The number of hours and type of reparation will be agreed between the Community Panel Members, the young person and their parent(s) and the victim if they wish to put forward suggestions.

The Youth Offending Team has a duty to contact victims and ask them whether or not they wish to receive direct reparation (tasks for themselves) or indirect reparation (tasks for the community).

Direct reparation could include an explanation, a letter of apology, cutting of grass, washing their car, work carried out at a place of their choice, i.e. a community centre they or their family use etc.

Indirect reparation takes place in the community, e.g. removing graffiti, painting and decorating, gardening work etc.

A member of the Youth Offending Team supervises on a one to one basis all activities carried out by the young people. Each reparation session lasts approximately 2 hours.

During the first year of Referral Orders young people carried out 1,082 hours of reparation, i.e. free supervised work for the community.

Bridgend Youth Offending Team is currently seeking new projects as reparation sites. If you run or are involved with a project which benefits the local community and are interested in some additional help please contact Mr Steve Chilcott, Reparation Officer on 01656 657243.

Bridgend Youth Offending Team is also seeking sessional workers to supervise young people carrying out reparation work. The work is on an adhoc basis and can take place during weekdays and weekends. Anyone interested can contact Mr Steve Chilcott, Reparation Officer for more information on 01656 657243.
