"The Bridgend Education, Leisure & Community Services have a major responsibility, on behalf of Bridgend County Borough Council, to seek to promote the development of the knowledge, skills and understanding of every child and adult within the county borough, thereby enhancing their sense of independence and self-worth."
There are two central beliefs embodied within this commitment to acknowledge that the learning process is central to every aspect of life:
1. To regard the provision of learning opportunities of the highest quality as a birthright and a lifelong entitlement for every child and adult living both within and visiting the county borough.
2. To interpret learning in the fullest possible sense, to include recreation and leisure, and ensure the provision of a wide variety of facilities and opportunities to enhance the health and enrich the quality of life of every citizen.
The directorate comprises four main divisions, each headed by an assistant director. The directorate recognises that the well being of society, whether it is viewed from a national perspective or in a local community context, is predominantly determined by the education process. Within Bridgend County Borough there is an understanding that education encompasses all learning experiences encountered by all people of all ages - a learning society.
