School Transport

Bridgend County Borough Council is currently one of the most generous local authorities in the UK in terms of providing free home to school/college transport for eligible pupils.

We are consulting over proposals to amend the home to school/college policy to allow savings of £800,000 a year to be reinvested in the school modernisation programme - find out more.

The number of children transported every day to primary, comprehensive and special schools is in the region of 6,500 and the transport used varies from taxis to double-decker buses.

Safety on School Transport

When it comes to school transport, safety is the council's key priority. Like many other authorities in Wales, the issue of misbehaviour on school transport is very much at the top of our agenda.

We are very proactive in promoting safety on school transport. CCTV systems have been installed on nearly 50% of buses used to take pupils to schools. Escorts and supervisors are also employed on particularly troublesome routes.

All drivers and escorts have been issued with an identity badge and have received training to deal with aggressive behaviour.

Launch of safety video

The council's bus safety video 'Your Life in Their Hands' has won the acclaim of the Welsh Assembly Government, has been supported by local education authorities throughout Wales and has been purchased by schools as far away as Canada.

The video addresses the problems of behaviour on school buses and attempts to raise the profile of the responsibilities of the driver. Copies of the video can be obtained by calling (01656) 642525 or emailing sarah.roberts@bridgend.gov.uk.

Parents have a responsibility too, and the council's education department has written to the parents of all pupils travelling on school transport to enlist their support.
