The Bridgend Events Safety Advisory Group

The Bridgend Events Safety Advisory Group was formed in 1999 at the request of the local Police Divisional Commander with the aim of looking at safety issues for any public events happening within the Bridgend county borough area and providing the organisers with help and guidance. The idea is not to discourage events in any way but to ensure that any events are carried out safely and successfully. Should any member of the group have any questions about an event, the organiser might be asked to come along to meet the group. In that way any issues can be discussed and the organiser can ask advice from the members - there is such a wide range of skills and experience available within the Events Safety Advisory Group.

Who is on the group?

Members include the Police, Fire Service, Ambulance Service, Coastguard, National Public Health Service Wales, Bridgend Local Health Board, Bro Morgannwg Hospitals Trust, St John Ambulance Brigade, the British Red Cross and Bridgend County Borough Council. The council's representatives are from Corporate Services (Licensing), Education, Leisure and Community Services (Leisure, Events), Environmental & Planning (Health & Safety, Food Safety, Transportation & Engineering, Building Control) and Chief Executive's (Emergency Planning).

The Events Safety Advisory group is chaired by Mark Shephard, Assistant Director for Leisure and Community Education.

Planning an event?

If you are organising an event in Bridgend, there are a number of responsibilities placed upon you as organiser. To help you plan your event there are a number of publications available. The Planning An Event leaflet ( English / Welsh ) is a general guide setting out the key points to consider and is especially useful for smaller events (under 250 people).

The Bridgend Events Safety Information booklet is a fuller document with more detailed information for planners of larger or more complex events. The section on traffic management is especially important for events on or near the highway or where pedestrians or vehicles associated with the event are likely to have an effect on the safety or movement of other highway users.

You should also look at the Health and Safety Executive's website for their publications www.hse.gov.uk and in particular the 5 Steps to Risk Assessment.
