Public Protection Department

The role of the Public Protection Department is to achieve a safe, pleasant and sustainable environment for the residents of and visitors to Bridgend County Borough. This role contributes significantly to the Bridgend County Borough Council corporate objectives of:

1. Improving the quality of life for all.
2. Looking after our environment.
3. Having safer communities.
4. Achieving a healthier county borough.

The Department acts at a strategic and operational level to promote and protect the health, safety and wellbeing of the public through the provision of advice, assistance and regulation in accordance with national and local policy. We are also committed to promoting a fair, safe and equitable trading environment by encouraging good business practice and protecting consumers.

Environmental Health

The Environmental Health function of the Public Protection Department provides a very wide range of services, including Pollution Control, Private Sector Housing and Public Health.

We are a dedicated team of professional Environmental Health and Technical Officers and our role is to ensure the protection of health and welfare of residents and visitors to Bridgend County Borough. The services we provide include the following:

Trading Standards

The service aims to ensure that fair-trading is carried out in Bridgend County Borough so that consumers can purchase goods and services with confidence in the knowledge that they are safe, correctly priced and accurately described. Similarly, trade and business activity can be carried out without fear that they are subjected to unfair competition from those operating outside the law.

The Trading Standards Service is responsible for the enforcement of over a hundred Acts of Parliament and a thousand associated regulations and European Directives. The service aim to provide help and assistance to both consumers and local businesses. Inspections are conducted on a risk-assessed basis. Products are purchased for testing and analysis and advice is given to local businesses on how to comply with legislation enforced by the service.

In addition, the Trading Standards Team conducts surveys into specific products and trading practises. When breaches of criminal legislation are discovered, the service conducts investigations which can result in prosecution of the businesses involved.
