Easy Going in Bridgend

Even if you have serious difficulty walking, you can still enjoy Bridgend Town Centre.

Borrow one of Shopmobility’s powered scooters, electric wheelchairs (including a wheelchair with powerpack), and you will have the freedom to go shopping in the extensively pedestrianised streets. Much of the pedestrianised area offers a smooth, level surface without kerbs that is ideal for anyone with a disability.

It doesn’t matter why your mobility is limited or whether you are a resident or a visitor to Bridgend. Shopmobility is there to lend a helping hand (and wheel) to anyone who needs it!

Where is Shopmobility?

The Shopmobility Centre is located on Level F, The Rhiw Car Park across the connecting walkway from the Rhiw Shopping Centre. Wheelchairs and scooters may be borrowed Monday to Saturday between 9.00am to 5.00pm.

Arriving By Car

Follow the Shopmobility signs for the Rhiw Car Park – where you can park for free next to the Shopmobility Centre (please book in advance). Alternatively you can take a taxi and ask them to drop you off at the Centre on Level F.

Arriving By Bus

The Centre is approximately 500 meters from a new, state-of-the-art, bus station in Market Street. The nearest bus stop to the Centre is outside McDonalds Restaurant or outside the Rhiw Shopping Centre, both of which are nearby on Nolton Street Bridgend. Unfortunately, the car park lifts to level F are currently out of action. For this reason, to access level F of the car park and the Shopmobility Centre on foot you will need to walk through the Rhiw Shopping Centre on Nolton Street, turn left after WH Smiths and up over the connecting bridge for the car park. (Look out for the Shopmobility sign on the roof of the bridge to direct you onto it).

Arriving By Train

Bridgend Station is on the main railway line between London and Swansea. A range of local trains also stop there.

The Shopmobility Centre in the Rhiw Car Park is approximately 300 meters walking distance from the station. You will need to walk down Court Road, then cross the road and go through the Rhiw Shopping Centre and across the walkway. Should you use a taxi, it will be able to drop you off directly at the Shopmobility Centre.

Using the Shopmobility Centre

The Shopmobility Centre is located on Level F of the Rhiw Car Park. If you are borrowing equipment, parking is free. The Centre has 6 extra width parking spaces for anyone who needs more space to get in and out of their car. You will need to phone a member of staff at the Centre to pre-book the space. Alternatively, if you are an Orange/Blue Badge holder, then there are a number of dedicated spaces in the car park where you can park free all day. If these are taken, your badge allows you free parking all day, in any parking space, in any public car park in Bridgend.

Collecting your wheelchair/scooter

You will be asked to provide two items of identification, one with you signature and one with your home address (e.g. gas bill and driving licence). On your first visit a member of staff will assist you with filling in your membership form. Once this is completed the equipment is available to hire at a refundable deposit of £2 per session (sessions are for mornings or afternoons). You will be shown how to use the scooters and advised by what time the equipment should be returned.

At the end of your visit

Return the scooter to the Centre. If you need help, a member of staff will accompany you to your car. Please note that, for health and safety reasons, staff are not allowed to actually lift anyone. However, if you need any other type of assistance, please ask.

Facilities at the centre

There are disabled toilet facilities in the Centre, which are large enough for a scooter to be taken in, for easier access.
