Maesteg Washery Regeneration Scheme
The £10 m Maesteg Washery Regeneration Scheme funded mainly by the Welsh Development Agency is underway. Once complete, it will provide a suitable site for the construction of the new comprehensive school and playing fields for Maesteg.
Washery Site update April 2004
Areas of the site are now nearing completion giving a hint of how the final scheme will look. What has gone largely unseen is the complex process of filling all of the old mining voids to prepare an area of the site for the construction of a new comprehensive school.
This operation is now complete and the plateau that will form the school site is being formed. Extensive drainage works are underway with many of the water channels being lined with local stone quarried from the hillside. The physical works will be complete this autumn although much of the extensive landscaping and planting work will be undertaken later when the conditions for planting are right. Great care has been taken with the environment to protect the various habitats of local wildlife and to enhance the biodiversity of the area.
When the last of the workers leave the area will have been transformed from a derelict eyesore to something of value to the community that will allow the construction of the new school.
You can read all about the project in the council’s In Touch Maesteg newsletter.
