‘Bling’ your bike to school

Pupils at Maes Yr Haul Primary in Broadlands, Bridgend have decorated their bicycles with tinsel, baubles and fairy lights to help launch a new initiative with a spot of festive fun.

The children showed off their blinged-up bikes to First Minister Carwyn Jones, Deputy Leader David Sage and Sustrans Cymru Director Lee Waters as they joined him for the launch of the new Bike It project.

Designed to encourage more young people to help the environment and keep themselves fit and healthy by cycling to school, the Bike It project is being run as a partnership between Bridgend County Borough Council and sustainable transport charity Sustrans Cymru.

Over the next two years, Bike It officer Louise Powell will be working with teachers, parents and pupils at 10 local schools to organise activities such as cycle skill and bike maintenance sessions, ‘bike breakfasts’ and special lessons linked to the national curriculum.

The First Minister joined Louise at Maes yr Haul to award prizes to pupils with the best decorated bikes.

Louise said: “Maes Yr Haul Primary is already working really hard to encourage kids to get on their bikes. Cycling has many benefits which the school and pupils are benefitting from, including being good for the environment and children’s health, and developing confidence and independence.”

Deputy Leader David Sage added: “The pilot phase of the Bike It project has already trebled the number of pupils at Maes yr Haul who are cycling to school. This excellent initiative will be of major benefit to pupils and young people throughout the county borough.”
