Park and ride success for Sarn and Pencoed
New, extended park and ride facilities are now fully up and running at two local railway stations.
As well as the new 56-space park and ride facility recently opened at Pencoed Railway Station, the car park at Sarn Railway Station has also been extended to create 33 dedicated spaces for drivers who want to use local rail links.
The facilities have been developed by Bridgend County Borough Council with the support of South East Wales Regional Consortia (Sewta). European and Welsh Government funding has helped to pay for the project.
They aim to stop ad hoc parking near the stations and encourage the use of rail links. At Pencoed it has also reduced the need for drivers to use the level crossing.
Councillor Mel Nott, Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council, said: "The new Sarn Park and Ride demonstrates Bridgend County Borough Council's ongoing commitment to public and sustainable transport and follows the similar initiative recently introduced at Pencoed as part of the ongoing regeneration of the area.
“As a former railway man myself, I feel especially proud that the promotion of public transport features so prominently in our policy and long-term thinking and planning. I'm grateful for Sewta's support and our European and Welsh Government funding which help make projects such as this possible.
“Sarn is well known for its excellent transport links and this is a further boost. I'm sure the residents of Sarn and the surrounding areas will get great benefit from using the new park and ride."
Drivers will be able to access both park and rides between 7am and 6pm. And although the inward gates close at 6pm, traffic flow plates still allow drivers to exit the car park after that time.
It means later train passengers can still drive from the car park after 6pm but the measures will prevent unsociable behaviour in the car parks after that time.
Both park and rides have been developed by BCBC and are supported by Sewta with Welsh Government and European funding.
