Heronsbridge welcomes sporting superstars
Heronsbridge pupils got the chance to train with some real-life sporting superstars when Olympic athletes Jamie Baulch and Matt Elias visited their school.
The visit, organised by Heronsbridge with The Jamie Baulch Academy, saw the children try a series of sponsored fitness activities with the top athletes.
With different exercises tailored to pupils of all ages according to their different physical abilities, the children were able to raise sponsor money to support Heronsbridge’s sporting links with schools in Botswana.
Heronsbridge helps the schools with resources, equipment and kit and last year staff from visited Botswana to run a football camp and a special Olympics event.
The event was also about encouraging the pupils to think of exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle, as well as giving them the opportunity to meet two Welsh sporting heroes.
The morning ended with Jamie speaking to the children in an assembly, showing them his Olympic medal and answering their questions.
400 metre runner Jamie, who won a silver medal at the 1996 Atlanta games, said: “I love visiting schools around Wales and finding what I call ‘that spark’ in the kids. It’s really rewarding.”
Fellow Welshman Matt, himself a European gold medal winner, added: “It’s great to visit Heronsbridge and see the enthusiasm of the kids. It’s clearly a fantastic place.”
Headteacher Chris Major said he was delighted that Heronsbridge has become the first school in Bridgend County Borough to foster links with the Jamie Baulch Academy.
He said: “Physical activity is very important for all children and this was a great opportunity to enjoy exercise under the guidance of two former Olympic athletes. They were fine ambassadors for sport and a pleasure to meet.”
