Enter the green dragon
Bridgend County Borough Council is leading the way for Welsh local authorities after achieving a prestigious level four Green Dragon standard.
Awarded by Groundwork, the standard helps businesses and local authorities improve overall performance while reducing their impact on the environment.
It recognises the positive actions that the council has taken within an environmental management system designed to use resources more efficiently, increase staff awareness about environmental issues and ensure that the authority complies with environmental legislation.
Achieving the level four standard means that Bridgend County Borough Council is now the leading local authority within Wales in terms of the development, implementation and operation of an environmental management system across its entire activities.
Councillor John Spanswick, Cabinet Member for Communities and the Cabinet’s environmental champion, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for the council and an indication of our commitment to environmental issues.
"The auditor specifically commented on the work done in Porthcawl Library, noted vast improvements in our leisure centres and swimming pools over the last two years and referred directly to work around preserving energy, recycling schemes and the management of waste.
“Congratulations are due to everyone who has helped the authority achieve this standard.”
The Green Dragon standard is divided over five levels and is the equivalent of international environmental management system standard ISO 14001.
