Porthcawl is the winner at Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open
The Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open tournament at the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in Rest Bay has been hailed a huge success for the area.
With a prize fund of £500,000 and a first prize of £75,000, it is the second most lucrative event on the European Senior Tour.
South African Bertus Smit held off the challenge of home favourite Ian Woosnam to win the title.
Bridgend County Borough Council worked very closely with the tournament organisers on issues like car parking, signage and litter.
Deputy Leader, Councillor David Sage, who represented the authority at the event, said: “It was fantastic to see something so prestigious taking place in Porthcawl and for the council to be associated which such an outstanding event.
“It was superbly organised so well done to the Ryder Cup, Royal Porthcawl Golf Club and employees of Bridgend County Borough Council for making it happen.
“Supporters and players alike were able to see for themselves that the area is a great place to play golf, visit and do business and I feel sure that we will see many of them make a return visit when the Ryder Cup comes to Wales next year. We look forward to giving them a warm welcome.”
