What a relief! Council launches local comfort scheme
Pubs, cafés, restaurants and shops throughout Bridgend County Borough are making their toilet facilities available to the general public as the area’s first ‘comfort’ scheme gets underway.
The Welsh Assembly Government has made funding available through its Assembly Government Public Facilities Grant Scheme for councils to encourage local businesses to allow members of the public to enter their premises and use their toilet facilities.
To date, 15 premises located around Bridgend County Borough have signed up for the scheme and the council is looking to recruit more.
Under the terms of the initiative, participating businesses are paid up to £500 a year to make their facilities available to the public. To receive the money, they must agree to keep their toilets clean and available for public use, to display prominent orange signs advertising the scheme and to allow regular inspections to take place.
Council Leader Mel Nott said: “This initiative will allow us to provide local people, visitors and tourists with a wider choice of public conveniences, many of which are open late into the night and are situated in some of the more remote parts of the county borough.
“Participating businesses will benefit from an increase in potential customers and positive publicity as the location of each premises taking part in the scheme will be advertised by the local authority.
“Bridgend County Borough Council is proud to be among the first local authorities in Wales to make the comfort scheme available and I strongly urge other local businesses to take part.”
