Council leads way with economic action group
An action group led by members of Bridgend County Borough Council’s Cabinet and the area’s AMs and MPs has been formed in response to the global economic crisis.
Council leader Mel Nott will hold special monthly meetings with his Cabinet, along with Bridgend AM Carwyn Jones, Ogmore AM Janice Gregory, Bridgend MP Madeleine Moon and Ogmore MP Huw Irranca Davies, to discuss the local impact of the credit crunch.
Councillor Nott believes the meetings will be a good opportunity for the politicians to share information and initiatives from the House of Commons and Welsh Assembly and look at how that can benefit the whole area.
Councillor Nott said: “I think this is a positive local response to the issues and hardships brought about by the international situation. All areas of Wales are feeling the impact of the credit crunch but we are optimistic about meeting this challenge and supporting our residents and businesses at this time.”
He added: “As well as meeting my colleagues from the Assembly and House of Commons, I will be liaising regularly with officers within the Council’s Economic Development Unit who continuously assess the local economic climate and provide outstanding support and advice to our local businesses. I will also be speaking to representatives of opposition party members on this issue. “
Councillor Nott said it was important to remember the considerable success of many local businesses and the extensive and significant regeneration taking places in the borough’s main towns of Bridgend, Porthcawl and Maesteg.
He said: “Our towns are all important retail centres for the borough and it is vital we support them. While we may have lost some national chains such as Woolworths and Adams, many of our existing retailers are doing well and we are seeing new businesses start up. This new action group will support the good work already taking place.”
