Ice cream kiosk owner prosecuted after worker severs fingertip
An ice cream kiosk owner has been fined £2,000 after a member of staff lost the tip of a finger inside a piece of machinery.
Mrs. Myra Williams, trading as Bay View Ice Cream Kiosk at Coney Beach, Porthcawl, pleaded guilty at Bridgend Magistrates Court under Section 11(a) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 for failing to prevent access to dangerous parts of a ‘Slush Puppy’ machine.
The court heard that a member of staff had not been given proper instruction and training relating to the safe use of the machine.
In an attempt to clear a blockage, the staff member reached into an opening at the top of the unit which contained spinning blades. A finger tip was severed and surgeons were subsequently unable to reattach it.
The council’s Public Protection department brought the prosecution after being informed of the incident by a member of the public.
Mrs. Williams was also ordered to pay costs of £410.
