First Minister to open county borough’s first Welsh-medium comprehensive school
First Minister, the Right Honourable Rhodri Morgan AM will officially open Bridgend County Borough’s first Welsh-medium comprehensive school on Thursday 15 January.
Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd in Maesteg welcomed its first Year Seven pupils in September 2008, who have enjoyed a busy and successful first term.
Until it opened, pupils from the borough’s four Welsh-medium primaries had to travel over the border into Rhondda Cynon Taff to continue their education at Ysgol Gyfun Llanhari.
The First Minister will be greeted by pupils playing the harp before he unveils a plaque made of Welsh slate at a special ceremony watched by children and VIPs.
The ceremony will also feature a performance by the school choir before Mr Morgan is invited to tour the school.
Bridgend County Borough Council has invested more than £1 million in a refurbishment programme designed to provide YGG Llangynwyd’s new pupils with first-class facilities.
New pupils will be taken on incrementally with the first pupils to enter the school reaching sixth form level by 2013 and 2014. The school will ultimately cater for up to 850 pupils aged between 11 and 18.
Mark Jones, Head Teacher at YGG Llangynwyd said: “Seeing the school moving from the planning stage, through to its opening over the past few months has been very pleasing. We still have a lot of work ahead but we are all motivated to ensure that Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd is a successful school with high standards.”
Pupil Rhian Taylor said: “It’s been a very beneficial time for us because there are good teachers and good systems in the school.”
Classmate Rowan Davies added: “We have great lessons and the teachers listen to us.”
