Thinking of buying a pet this Christmas?
Animal Health officers at Bridgend County Borough Council are urging anyone who is considering giving a pet as a Christmas gift to think twice.
Rhian Evans, Companion Animal Officer, said: “Buying a pet as a Christmas present is not a good idea because you don’t know if the animal is suitable for that person.
“Pets are a lifetime commitment, and different animals will have specific needs which should be researched to ensure that it is suitable.
“A person may be unprepared for the care the animal will need, and might not have any of the necessary equipment.”
Under the under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, owners are legally responsible for providing for an animal's requirements.
An animal should have:
- A suitable environment to live in.
- A suitable diet.
- Be able to behave normally.
- Have appropriate company.
- Be protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease.
Failure to take reasonable steps to provide for these needs is an offence, and could lead to criminal proceedings.
