Bridgend residents are top of the learning league
New figures have revealed that Bridgend County Borough has the highest number of people in Wales who opt to improve their skills through e-teaching organisation, Learndirect.
Research by Learndirect has shown that Bridgend County Borough has a higher density of learners than in any other area in Wales, with 165 people per thousand (compared with 57 per thousand across Wales) using online learning to improve their knowledge in subjects that include literacy and numeracy.
With 16,900 local learners, that’s enough to reach around Bridgend RFC’s Brewery Field stadium pitch 82 times.
These statistics put hardworking Bridgend County Borough residents firmly at the top of the Welsh league, with the nearest competitor, Neath Port Talbot, claiming second place with 113 learners per thousand.
Since Learndirect was launched in 2000, more than 2.5 million learners across the country have taken over 6.8 million courses. It uses a network of online learning centres to provide flexible learning for adults wanting to improve existing skills or to learn new ones. Around 630 different courses are currently available.
The most popular Learndirect course in Bridgend County Borough is currently ‘Getting a Job’, one of many Skills for Life courses available.
The Learndirect partnership in Bridgend County Borough is led by Bridgend College, who work closely with Bridgend County Borough Council's Library and Information Service and a number of other local organisations.
