£3m boost for local jobs

Unemployed people in Bridgend County Borough are set to benefit from a new £3m scheme designed to help them find work.

The Bridges into Work scheme is targeting six Welsh counties, including Bridgend County Borough, to help almost 3,000 people find work and deliver training and qualifications to over 10,000 more.

The Welsh Assembly Government has approved £19m of Convergence funding for the all-Wales scheme, which will target people who are currently unemployed or on incapacity benefit as well as those with a work limiting health condition. It will also tackle other barriers to employment such as transport, childcare and issues such as a lack of self esteem.

Case workers will provide advice and guidance to participants in the scheme and help them gain access to new skills and qualifications.

Deputy Minister for Skills, John Griffiths, said: "Bridges into Work is a great example of partnership working and will help thousands of people across six counties access the support and guidance they need to overcome the barriers to employment.

The Bridges into Work scheme will collaborate with other projects that help people find jobs and access work-based training opportunities

Councillor John Spanswick, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “In the current economic climate, better training and skills are more essential than ever. The Bridges into Work scheme will help unemployed people get back on their feet while also supporting the local economy. “

Almost £1.7 billion of European Structural Funds has been allocated to Wales for the 2007-2013 period. Match-funding will provide a total investment of over £3.6 billion to boost jobs and economic growth in South Wales.
