Bridgend among best in Wales for paying bills on time
Latest statistics from the Local Government Data Unit have revealed that Bridgend County Borough Council is one of the best authorities in Wales when it comes to paying invoices.
Guidelines state that local authorities are expected to pay all uncontested invoices within 30 days.
In Bridgend, the council pays 96% of all invoices within 30 days. Of these, more than half (53%) are paid within just 10 days.
The average number of invoices paid within 30 days among Welsh local authorities currently stands at 87%.
Every year, business generated by local government is worth millions to small firms and companies. Paying invoices on time has become a major issue in the current economic climate with many small enterprises reliant on a steady cash flow.
The recent Wales Economic Summit also highlighted the importance of increasing the speed with which bills are paid.
Councillor Huw David, Cabinet Member for Resources, said: “I am delighted at Bridgend County Borough Council’s good performance in this important area.
“During these difficult times, it is vital that we do all we can to support local businesses, and that includes paying them on time.
“As well as supporting local firms and local jobs, it helps ensure that local businesses continue to provide a wide range of essential council services to the people of the county borough - from round the clock care for vulnerable adults to home-to-school transport for thousands of children.”
