More older people urged to move into business
Older residents in Bridgend County Borough are being encouraged to put their business ideas into practice as part of the Volunteer Mentoring scheme.
A partnership between Bridgend County Borough Council and older person’s charity Prime Cymru, the Volunteer Mentoring initiative allows trained mentors to use their expertise to support older people who want to move into business, education or training.
To date, the scheme has helped launch more than 1,400 new businesses throughout Wales and has created over 2,000 jobs.
Councillor Lyn Morgan, Older Person’s Champion and Cabinet member for Wellbeing, said: “Compared to the rest of the UK, Wales currently has a higher share of older people with 22% of the Welsh population aged 50 and over.
“The percentage is even bigger in Bridgend County Borough where more than 35% of the local population are aged 50 plus. This figure is expected to increase, but at the same time, an average decrease of 6% in the younger population is anticipated.
“In the face of these statistics, it makes sense for older residents to step forward with their business ideas and receive all the support and advice they need to turn their ideas into reality through the Volunteer Mentoring scheme.”
