Live link with Ghana as pupils meet for green conference

Pupils from across Bridgend County Borough gathered at Ogmore Comprehensive School recently for the second Bridgend Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship conference.

Following the success of last year’s conference which focused on Fair Trade, this year’s theme was Global Citizenship and how we can all play a part in creating sustainable communities around the world.

The pupils set up a live link with their peers at Great Fammis School in Ghana and received a keynote address from Phil Williams of Plan-IT Eco.

They also took part in a series of workshops with organisations such as Eco-Schools, SUSSED, Welsh Water, Equalities Wales, Wildlife Trust, Amnesty International, Fair Trade, Groundwork Trust, Sustainable Education Projects and others.

The conference was organised by the Education and Schools Improvement Service, Ogmore Comprehensive School and the Bridgend Environmental Education and Sustainability Partnership.

Ogmore Comprehensive School was the first secondary school in Bridgend County Borough to achieve an Eco-Schools Green Flag as well as Fair Trade status.

Teacher Vicki Pearce was also recently recognised by Bridgend County Borough Council’s FACE awards where she won the FACE of Environment category for her sustainability work with pupils.
