Don’t toy with child safety this Christmas
With the festive season almost upon us, Bridgend County Borough Council‘s Trading Standards team is issuing advice for anyone who is planning on buying toys for children.
Lee Jones, Head of Trading Standards, said: “Many children are injured every year by playing with unsuitable or dangerous toys. The majority of such incidents can be avoided by buying wisely and ensuring that toys are appropriate for a child’s age and abilities.
“Look out for any age or safety warnings and take note of any instructions provided, especially for any item bought for children aged three or younger.
“Don’t be tempted to buy cheap, counterfeit copies of toys as these very often do not comply with the usual European product safety legislation required for the supply of toys in the UK. Counterfeit toys have been found to be incorrectly labelled, could have sharp edges and may be decorated in toxic paints.
By sticking to the following advice, you can make sure you remain a savvy shopper in line with the theme of National Consumer Week (17-21 November 2008).
- Only buy toys only from recognised outlets and retail sites.
- If buying online, don’t assume that the company is UK based – get a full postal address.
- Make sure the toy is suitable for the child by checking the age range.
- Be particularly careful when buying toys for children aged three and under.
- Be wary of young children playing with older children’s toys.
- Check for loose hair, small parts, sharp edges and points.
- Ensure that garden swings and slides are robust and are not a strangulation hazard.
- Check toys regularly for wear and tear. Either repair or dispose of them where necessary.
- Keep the play area as tidy as possible.
- Follow the instructions and warnings provided with toys.
- Supervise young children at play.
If you find or purchase a toy which is unsafe, contact Consumer Direct Wales on 08454 040506 or Bridgend County Borough Council’s Trading Standards team on 01656 643643.
