Organ donor register link on Council website
Bridgend County Borough Council is giving residents and staff the opportunity to join the NHS Organ Donor Register via its website and staff intranet site.
It means people who wish to register as organ donors can do so by simply clicking on the secure link provided by the NHS Organ Donor Register and entering their details.
The move has been welcomed and praised by the UK Transplant which is constantly looking to recruit more donors.
The idea was first suggested by Bridgend County Borough Council senior accountant Paul Thomas, 53, who donated a kidney to his 46-year-old brother Andrew earlier this year.
Paul has also given evidence to the Welsh Assembly’s inquiry into presumed consent for organ donation.
Paul said: “There are more than 500 people waiting for a transplant in Wales, and more than 130 have died in the last five years waiting for an organ to become available.
“This is a very sensitive, personal and individual choice, but all the indications are that most people are willing for their organs to be donated, they just haven’t got round to signing up.
“However, registering can be done online and it’s a really quick and easy process.
“I am very pleased Bridgend County Borough Council has agreed to make the link available on the website which gives people an easy route to join up if they should choose to.”
Anyone who is interested in joining the NHS Organ Donor Register can log on to www.bridgend.gov.uk and click on ‘Community Info’ on the bottom left of the home page.
Alternatively, visit www.uktransplant.org.uk or call the NHS Organ Donor Line on 0845 60 60 400. Lines are open 24 hours, 365 days a year and calls are charged at your contracted rate for local calls.
