Be a savvy shopper
How to be a savvy shopper and Christmas shopping and the internet are among the themes of this year’s National Consumer Week (17-21 November 2008).
Bridgend County Borough Council’s Trading Standards team will be supporting the initiative by organising a short quiz for visitors to the customer service centre at the civic offices in Angel Street, Bridgend. Winners will receive FREE vouchers for Marks and Spencer.
Officers will also be providing tips and guidance about how to shop safely and wisely over the festive season.
Lee Jones, Head of Trading Standards, said: “It is important that consumers are made aware of their rights, and of some of the pit falls and scams that exist. We hope to use National Consumer Week to highlight these.
“When you buy something on the high street or online, you are getting into a legal contract with the seller.
“Consumers have statutory rights due to the Sale of Goods Act 1979 which states that goods must be as described, of satisfactory quality and fit for both their everyday purpose and any specific purpose that you agreed with the seller, for example, if you specifically asked for a printer that would be compatible with your computer.
“Goods sold must also match any sample you were shown in-store or any description in a brochure.”
Further advice can be obtained by contacting Consumer Direct Wales on 08454 040506 or visiting www.consumerdirect.gov.uk.
The website will feature ‘savvy’ pages during the week where consumers can share their shopping experiences, learn about local events where they can get face-to-face advice and also read the latest National Consumer Week press releases.
