Anti Bullying Week 2008

With Anti-Bullying Week 2008 taking place between November 17-21, Bridgend County Borough Council is offering advice that will help local residents spot when someone is being bullied.

Bullying is deliberately hurtful, takes place over long periods of time and is something that people often find difficult to defend themselves against.

Bullying can be physical, with people being hit, kicked or having their belongings taken away, or it can be verbal, with name-calling, unpleasant remarks or insults.

It can also be emotional - for example, through spreading nasty stories or leaving people out of activities. Indirect bullying can also involve sending malicious text messages or emails, which extends bullying to any location or time.

When bullying takes place in a school, it is usually out of sight of staff during break times or when pupils move between classes. Children do not normally come right out and say they are being bullied, so ask them about bullying if they:

Councillor Alana Davies, Cabinet member for Children and Young People, said: “There are a number of methods in place to deal with this problem such as anti-bullying initiatives, incident records, confidential bullying surveys, peer counselling and learning about bullying and its effects in lessons.

“Bridgend County Borough also has a ‘Playground Peacemaker’ scheme that has helped reduce bullying in infant and primary schools. “
