Local children enjoy a Dalek-table day out
Thirty lucky children from Bridgend County Borough have enjoyed an out of this world experience with the makers of Doctor Who.
They submitted winning entries in a competition aimed at schools which asked year seven pupils to describe why they would make ideal travelling companions for the Doctor.
The prize gave children from Archbishop McGrath, Brynteg, Bryntyrion, Cynffig, Maesteg, Ogmore and Porthcawl comprehensive schools back stage access at BBC Wales’ Doctor Who studio in Treforest.
They were welcomed with specially recorded messages from Doctor Who stars David Tennant and Catherine Tate before meeting the team responsible for making the programme.
After visiting sets used for filming episodes of Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures and Doctor Who, the children explored the interior of the TARDIS and took part in a special radio drama on the set of Sarah Jane’s Attic.
A highlight of the visit saw them venturing into the depths of the Monster Vaults where monster makers Millennium FX introduced them to some of the Doctor’s friends and enemies, including the Ood, Cybermen and Scarecrows.
Professional crew members demonstrated how the show’s costumes and stunning sets are created before the children had a go at being on screen themselves using state of the art special effects.
But the day would not have been complete without a scary encounter with the Doctor’s most infamous foe - the Daleks!
Nick Briggs, the actor responsible for the chilling voice of the Daleks, was on hand to demonstrate how the famous vocal effect is achieved.
Rhodri Talfan Davies, Head of Marketing, Communications and Audiences at BBC Wales, said: “The children had a fantastic time. This was a once in a lifetime experience.
“Not only did they get to take a sneak peak behind the scenes at the studios, they also got to see an exclusive preview of the forthcoming Christmas episode, The Next Doctor.”
