All aboard for council’s new youth bus
Bridgend County Borough Council’s Youth Service has been given the go-ahead to buy a state-of-the-art youth bus.
The Youth Service will use a Welsh Assembly Government grant to buy the vehicle and equip it to provide a mobile youth facility.
The £130,000 bus will bring arts, media and information-based services and activities to communities which lack facilities.
Hard-to-reach young people will be able to use the bus to learn film-making and produce issue-based films, as well as try out music workshops and street theatre.
The grant will be broken down into £20,000 to buy a 10-year-old single deck bus and £110,000 for extensive renovations and equipment.
Today (Tuesday), Cabinet Members agreed to the Youth Service’s request to bypass the usual tendering process in order for the service to press ahead with the project, after hearing that such an exemption could be justified in special circumstances.
Councillor Alana Davies, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “This is a sensible way forward to make best use of this grant. It will provide an excellent service to a group of young people that will really benefit from this.”
