Mayor's presentation to family of fallen hero
The Mayor of Bridgend County Borough Councillor Cleone Westwood, has invited the family of Private Craig Barber to receive a special version of a poem written in tribute to him.
Private Barber, from Blaengarw, was killed in action in Iraq last year.
In August this year Bridgend County Borough Council granted his regiment The Royal Welsh the Freedom of the County Borough, during which Private Kevin Pollard read out a moving poem he had written in memory of his fallen comrade.
Private Pollard was on duty with Private Barber on the day that he was killed in action in Basra. He organised the retrieval of Private Barber's body from the tank he was shot in.
Now a specially framed version of that poem, featuring a photograph of Private Pollard and the Barber family taken on the day of the Freedom parade, will be presented to them in the Mayor's parlour on Wednesday 5 November.
Mayor Westwood said: "The poem and picture have been merged to create a wonderful tribute to Private Craig Barber. It also commemorates his family's very special part in the Freedom of the County Borough ceremony and I am honoured to be meeting them again and to be making this important presentation."
Bridgend County Borough Council has produced copies of the poem and picture for each member of the family party including Private Barber's widow Donna Barber and four-year-old-son Bradley.
His mother Cheryl Rowlands will also be given a copy of the poem to present to Private Pollard when he attends a fund raising event in Private Barber's memory on Saturday 8 November.
