Bridgend WJEC A and AS level results 2005

Pupils in Bridgend schools have again achieved an excellent set of results in this year's WJEC 'A' level examinations. Particularly striking is the proportion of candidates achieving the very highest grade (grade A), which has risen by a further two percentage points to an all-time high of 27.1%. In addition, well over three-quarters of candidates achieved grades A-C and over 99% achieved a pass grade (grades A-E). The proportion of candidates achieving A grades has doubled since the LEA's inception in 1996.

The results in this year's WJEC Advanced Subsidiary (AS) examinations are equally encouraging, with record proportions of candidates achieving passes at each of grade A, grades A-C and grades A-E.

Commenting on this year's performance, Cabinet Member for Education Councillor Peter Foley stated, 'Excellent results like these are a direct result of the hard work done by our sixth form students and the excellent teaching in our schools that has prepared them so thoroughly. Young people today face many pressures and challenges and these successes are a great credit to them.

Bridgend schools, working in partnership, are determined to continue to raise both the participation and achievement of our young people in education post 16. We are delighted at the progress that is being made in raising standards and in extending opportunity and choice.'

Graham Avery, Acting Executive Director - Learning, commented, 'I am sure that everyone in the LEA, in the schools and in the wider community will want to join in congratulating these students on their achievements. We are committed to supporting all our young people, whatever their aptitudes and abilities, in fulfilling their potential and wish to encourage any who may not have achieved the grades they wanted to make use of our network of support in helping to plan their next steps in planning a successful and rewarding future.'

Note to editors:

The figures quoted above and in the first three tables that follow are based on WJEC 'A' level results only and should therefore be treated with a considerable degree of caution as schools will have entered varying, but quite possibly significant, proportions of students for 'A' levels with other Examination Boards. In recent years around a third of 'A' level entries in Wales have been with other boards. Fuller data on results at LEA level will be available at a later date.

Comparative WJEC-only data for Wales as a whole has not been made available in 2005. However, some all Wales data, based on results from all Examination Boards, has been released and is also summarised below.
