Council Wins UK-Wide Age Positive Award
Beating strong contenders from England and Scotland, Bridgend County Borough Council has scooped the UK-wide Age Positive Award for its commitment towards equal opportunities and changing stereotypical attitudes towards younger and older workers.
The council has become the first local authority in Wales to be awarded Champion status by Age Positive, a government campaign to tackle age discrimination in the workplace and has also been presented with the National Wales Age Positive Award.
To become an Age Positive Champion, organisations must be committed to tackling age discrimination in the workplace and demonstrate that they are taking practical steps to change employment practices or support overcoming discrimination, either through research, campaigning or working in partnership with the the Department for Work and Pensions' Age Positive campaign team.
The council's human resources department submitted the bid and Assistant Director for Human Resources Neil Lodwick was presented with the prestigious award during a ceremony in London today (Tuesday, 22 June).
Neil says: "Bridgend County Borough Council is extremely proud to receive this national award in recognition of its commitment to eliminating age discrimination in the workplace. We hope that the benefits of achieving this award will encourage other like-minded organisations to develop good age positive practices in the future. Receiving this award is a visible message to both our current and future employees of our dedication to encouraging such issues as fair recruitment and retention regardless of age."
