Dangerous Toys Found On Sale

Officers from the Public Protection department of Bridgend County Borough Council are urging local shoppers to be alert for dangerous toys and novelty flashing baby dummies this Christmas after finding them on sale in Bridgend town centre.

The dangerous items were found in Adare Street after officers approached unlicensed street traders. Among the haul were 46 cheaply-made battery operated animals featuring dogs, rats, pandas and rabbits that when inspected were found to contain sharp edges and points, loose fur and open access to inner mechanisms. 113 battery-operated flashing baby dummies that have been known to leak acid and burn the inside of children’s mouths and a number of animated Christmas novelty figures were also seized.

“These dangerous items pose a safety hazard to any child who uses them,” says Councillor Colin Teesdale, Cabinet Member for Environmental, Planning, Highways and Technical. ”The goods appear to have been imported into the UK without any safety checks and are being sold by numerous street traders across the country. A genuine toy that has passed safety tests will have labels bearing the CE safety mark and manufacturer’s address, and these items have neither.

“As well as the Bridgend town centre haul, there have also been reports that these goods have been on sale in both Maesteg and Porthcawl. If anyone sees these dangerous items anywhere, tell the council and we will make sure that they are removed.”
