Out of the Woods – Figuration to Abstraction

The talk will explore the gradual development of more abstract approaches from direct figurative experiments detailing the conceptual intentions of the work. Focusing primarily on illustrating the changes through major painted outcomes the artist will also talk about parallel experiments in Printmaking, book art, sculpture and sketchbooks bringing along a series of actual examples.

Title:
Site Specific Practice

Incorporating sculpture, video, photography, installation, actions and ceramics, Craig Wood has no preferred medium, rather each project takes him in different directions. Throughout his work however his starting point always comes from what he knows best - that which immediately surrounds him. Because of this, his practice can be said to be site-specific, socially engaged and concerned with the relationship between local and global.

Through his practice Wood engages the viewer with humour, surrealism and
consummate wit, raising serious questions about the world we have created
and our imagined futures. Karen MacKinnon

Title:
Full of beautiful things

After spending a quarter of a century in Welsh medium education
[mae e’n siarad good Cymraeg!.....but is something of a slow learner.]

John’s 14 year old brain still exudes enthusiasm. A member of Silures Art Group, his efforts are always late and damp!, but his style has developed [well.. changed] over the last 15 years from his Brian Shambler- inspired wet, wet period , to his discovery of acrylics and his infamous “sheep period”.

Much to his friend’s relief [his one remaining friend!] his style is metamorphosing into a sheep hating doggy- chicken-pig- period. Something to really look forward to!

John is inspired by his love of this wonderful country and county of ours and by the words of Ben Evans who in 1934 said “I have discovered that life is full of beautiful things...I am very happy.”
