Changes to Welsh Assembly Government Free Swimming Initiative (FSI)

Bridgend County Borough Council is committed to providing a full and balanced programme of activities for all its citizens.

During the school holidays and the coming year the council will continue to operate the Welsh Assembly Government’s Free Swimming Initiative (FSI) for children 16 and under.

The national steering group for FSI have reviewed the scheme and made changes to the minimum criteria for local authorities. In line with this, the number of free sessions available for children 16 and under has been reduced. For this reason, all customers are asked to check current and future programmes carefully for any changes to pool times and availability.

In Bridgend we currently offer 250% (21 hours) more free swimming time than that set out in the national minimum criteria for the scheme. We will also now be offering a limited number of free swimming sessions on weekends throughout the year.

The scheme for the over 60’s remains unchanged.

Bridgend County Borough Council actively supports Learn To Swim classes for under 16s and will be providing more classes and other supported activities in the future.
