Background

Under the 2000 Local Government Act, local councils must, in partnership, prepare a community strategy to improve the social, economic and environmental well-being for their area. Community strategies are intended to bring together all those who can contribute to the future of communities within a local authority area, to agree on the key priorities for the area and pursue them in partnership.

In Bridgend the Community Strategy was prepared by the then Local Strategic Partnership (LSP), whose membership is drawn from the public, private, voluntary and community sectors. (The LSP has now been replaced by a Local Service Board (LSB)).

In developing the Strategy, a needs assessment (jointly with the health social care and well-being strategy) provided the statistical picture of needs and provisions across the county borough. Consultation with the public, the citizen’s panel, partners, organisations and individuals on this assessment provided the key themes for the strategy.

- Employment and Economic Regeneration
- Children and Young People
- Older People
- The Environment
- Health and Well-being
- Access to Services and Information
- Access to Opportunity and Transport
- Working Better Together

Structure of the Community Strategy

Long and medium term objectives (2012-2016 and 2008-2012) are developed from the existing partnerships’ strategies and work. The intention is not to create another tier of objectives, but to add value by drawing out the broad themes, focussing on gaps and cross cutting issues.

An action plan for 2004-2006, as part of the strategy, contains activities and targets on

- Access to opportunity and transport
- Access to services and information
- Working better together
