A bright future for Bridgend County

Some of Bridgend County’s most stunning landscapes provide the backdrop to a new community strategy for the area.

The document, called ‘bright future’, is Bridgend Local Service Board’s first community strategy and is the result of extensive consultation with residents.

As part of the consultation, local people were asked to describe what they loved best about the area.

The most popular answers were the diversity of the landscape, the area’s beautiful valleys and coastline, its proud heritage and its sense of community spirit.

With this in mind, award-winning Porthcawl photographer Martin Phillips was asked to capture the area’s best loved landmarks and portraits of the people who make up Bridgend County.

A Community Strategy for Bridgend County 2009 - 2012

Dr Jo Farrar is chair of the Local Service Board and is delighted with both the strategy and the pictures which illustrate it.

She said: “We recognise that no one knows this area better than our residents which is why it is their views which have shaped our new community strategy.

“Local people were really honest and told us what they loved about living and working here and about what needed to change. They have told us where our priorities should be and now we have set out how we can now work together to achieve our vision for Bridgend County. “

The strategy includes details on the LSB’s key priorities and the difference this will make to local people, examples of where progress is already being made, local views and how they have been included, measures of success, and how residents can continue to get involved

There’s also an action plan with more detail about some of the work planned or underway.

Four areas will be targeted straight away. They are alcohol misuse, helping people to tackle the impact of the economic recession, looking after our emotional wellbeing and engaging people in Bridgend County.

Dr Farrar added: “I hope people will take the time to look at ‘bright future’ and continue to be involved in shaping services in the area. I think the combination of honest feedback, positive action and the stunning local photographs makes it a very important and readable strategy for an area which we should be really proud of.”

The website is continually being improved and expanded, so there will be much more to see soon.
