Urdd Eisteddfod 2017
The Urdd Eisteddfod started as a two day event in 1929, with the main focus on competing but today it is a family friendly six day event which attracts around 90,000 visitors. It will be held this year on Bridgend College’s Pencoed Campus 29 May – 3 June 2017.
Within the 20 acre festival site, or ‘Maes’, you will find the competing pavilion, a funfair and around 80 stalls selling allsorts – from jewellery and clothes to picnic tables and trailers. There is also an activity field with a climbing wall, quad bikes, trampolines and various workshops as well as live bands performing in the food arena. With its exciting arts and science pavilions and the Cwtch Cymraeg, which is a specific resource for Welsh learners, it’s a brilliant opportunity to spend a day with the family in a unique Welsh atmosphere.
||Competing in the Eisteddfod is a fun and memorable experience; Welsh stars such as Alex Jones and Mathew Rhys have attributed their success to the experience. Competitors learn a wide range of transferable skills through their participation and of course the winners of stage competitions get to perform live on TV in the pavilion - while winning artwork will be displayed all week in a special exhibition.
Local businesses also stand to benefit greatly from the influx of around 90,000 visitors, with up to 70% staying for two days or more and 15% staying an entire week. 78% of visitors report spending money in local businesses. Including the investment in the Maes itself, it’s estimated that hosting the Eisteddfod represents an economic boost of around £6m to an area.
The Urdd Eisteddfod are always looking for local volunteers to help during the week, but also in the run up – raising money and awareness of the event. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Ruth@urdd.org.
Local businesses can also sponsor elements of the festival in return for promotional benefits on the Maes. For more information, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
