Sustainable DevelopmentClimate change and peak oil

Climate change - Our climate is changing, largely due to the increase in human produced greenhouse gases which absorb heat from the sun in the atmosphere and reduce the amount that escapes into space. This is causing changes in our climate which include increases in global air and ocean temperature, rising global sea levels and changes in rainfall and wind patterns.

Peak oil - Our society is heavily dependent upon an abundant supply of cheap oil. There is much debate as to when ‘peak oil’ will occur (when the amount of oil produced worldwide reaches a peak and starts a permanent decline). What is clear however that oil is a non-renewable fuel and that supplies will diminish and eventually run out.

To minimise the impact that these changes will have it is important that we begin use our resources more wisely, reduce our carbon emissions and become a society that is not dependent on oil.

How is Bridgend CBC responding to the threat of Climate Change and Peak Oil?

Climate Change and Peak Oil Strategy and Action Plan –

The Council signed up to the Welsh Climate Change Commitment in 2005 and produced a Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan in April 2010 as a means of both recognising and addressing the risks posed by climate change and peak oil.

Local Climate Impact Profile (LCLIP)

A Local Climate Impacts Profile was recently undertaken to look at the impact of recent weather and climate events, how these events were dealt with and what costs were involved. We hope this project will provide an understanding of our how these events affect Council services and the lives of people in Bridgend.

Awareness Raising –

Events and workshops take place throughout the year to raise awareness amongst staff, senior officers and Councillors of the impacts of climate change and peak oil.
