Play Development

Wales is the first country in the world to place a statutory duty on local authorities to secure sufficient play opportunities for children and young people up until the age of 17. As part of the play sufficiency statutory duty, we are required every three years to conduct a local assessment of matters relating to play and produce an action plan that progressively creates improvements. There is an emphasis on working with community partners to develop sustainable approaches to secure play for children and young people up until the age of 17 because of the benefits it can deliver.

The Play Action Plan includes areas such as playgrounds, open spaces and play schemes, as well as the development of the paid and volunteer workforce, making streets safer, improving the available information about play and ensuring that play is recognised across all areas of policy and service.

We are working with partners to develop a play network that can support parents and carers, community groups, schools and other groups to increase the volume and quality of local opportunities and improve the lives of local people.

For further information on play opportunities and things to do in your local area please contact the Play development team on 01656 642725.
