Sport, Play and Active Wellbeing
Through these services we aim to support local people and communities to live healthier and more active lives. This links to Welsh Government’s focus on improving wellbeing and recognising the need for supporting those who are less active.
Areas which form part of the Sport, Play and Active Wellbeing service include:
Welsh Government has introduced a statutory duty on play sufficiency that contributes to the childhood obesity action plan. We have assessed local play places, spaces and opportunities and created an action plan, which sets out to secure play for children and young people up until the age of 17.
Active Young People Department (AYPD):
In response to the new Welsh Government physical activity strategy the service leads on the County Sport Plan and regional approaches to increase physical activity. The AYPD works closely with schools to implement programmes such as the Family Active Zone, improving physical literacy and confidence for early years and a leadership programme for older children and young people to provide them with useful skills and experience for when they leave school.
We have an exciting partnership in place with HALO Leisure and work together to improve facilities and offer activities that meet the needs of local people.
BCBC also supports the community use of school sport centre sites and directly operates 4 facilities, as well as supporting other arrangements directly run by schools.
We recognise that people who are 50 plus have much to offer our county borough and its communities. As people age we want to ensure that their lives maintain a sense of value, meaning and purpose by providing suitable support and opportunities. To find out more about how we set out to provide this, a copy of our Ageing Well Plan is available here.
We have a dedicated Disability Sport Wales officer who operates the National Disability Sport programme, working with schools and local organisations to provide inclusive sport opportunities. We are accredited with the silver level ‘InSport’ standard from Disability Sport Wales.
As well as these areas, a range of targeted services and programmes are in place to support groups of people to be more active including those with disabilities, older people, women and girls and people living in disadvantaged areas.
